Innovative Solutions to Global Needs

What began as an assignment in an advanced soil mechanics class at the United States Military Academy at West Point developed into the special section in this issue entitled "New Perspectives on Military Engagements." The assignment was to conduct research at the intersection of three areas: soil mechanics, history, and military engagement. In essence it was an opportunity to view historic military events through the lens of a civil engineer, and in the case of each of the three articles included in this section, the cadets-now second lieutenants serving in the United States Army-formed new perspectives on these events. The articles are coauthored by the instructor, Brock E. Barry, Ph.D., P.E., M.ASCE, an associate professor in the academy's civil and mechanical engineering department.
