When the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor, on December 7, 1941, they dealt a stunning blow to the U.S. Navy's Pacific Fleet. The attack would have been even more devastating, however, if the enemy had not made a critical strategic error. Having been instructed to target ships and aircraft, the Japanese pilots failed to direct their fire at the aboveground fuel tanks that contained the fleet's entire fuel supply. If the Japanese had destroyed them, the sudden lack of fuel would have crippled the fleet.
