Construction recently began on the first leg of an effort to control flooding within an economically important industrial area within Sparks, Nevada. Although relatively small in scope, the project is one component of an ambitious regional plan to address flooding along the Truckee River in Sparks and Reno, Nevada. With its origins at the outlet of Lake Tahoe, the 120 mi long Truckee River flows northeast into Nevada before passing through Reno and Sparks on its way to Pyramid Lake. Just to the east of Sparks the river enters a narrow canyon, causing the waterway to back up and produce localized flooding during times of high water. The river has caused extensive flood damage in both Reno and Sparks, prompting calls to reduce flooding along the waterway.
