CABLE-SUPPORTED bridges are well known and understood, but what about cable-supported towers? Architect Rustem Baishev, Assoc.AIA, the founder of RB Systems in New York City, has developed a speculative proposal that extends the use of cable supports in the design of a skyscraper for a 30 by 30 m site at 265 W. 45th Street in New York City. The concept for the superslender, 101-story tower, which has a circular footprint, replaces traditional perimeter columns with steel cables that spiral around the exterior of the structure, restraining forces much like a corset. At its widest section, between levels 20 and 80, the tower would have a mere 27.2 m diameter. Level 96 would host a multistory observation deck with 360-degree views of the city and its surroundings. The tower would include a traditional central concrete core, each level supported by cantilevering, ultralight Angelina beams. Atop the beams would be a 120 mm thick concrete slab and a raised floor.
