El transporte ferroviario como la solución de transporte más sostenible: desarrollos actuales para la mejora de la eficiencia energética del ferrocarril

Este artículo presenta las diferentes alternativas actuales para la mejora de la eficiencia energética del ferrocarril. Si bien actualmente el ferrocarril es sin ninguna duda el sistema de transporte más eficiente y que genera menos emisiones de CO_2, también es una realidad que los restantes sistemas de transporte, especialmente los vehículos eléctricos, trabajan muy activamente en la reducción de sus emisiones y en la electrificación. Es por ello que el ferrocarril está desarrollando una actividad muy intensa de cara a reducir su consumo energético, también porque es la componente más alta de los costes de explotación. En el artículo se analizan los diferentes sistemas de tracción eléctrica ferroviaria, así como las soluciones que se están implantando actualmente en el ferrocarril español para mejorar la eficiencia energética.%This paper explains the different alternatives currently used to improve railway energy efficiency. Rail transport is, with no doubt, the most efficient and least CO_2 emitting transport mode. On the other hand, other transport means, especially electric vehicles, are increasing very rapidly their energy efficiency and reducing CO_2 emissions. For that reason railways are also developing an intense activity to reduce electric consumption, not only for being greener but also because electric consumption represents the highest exploitation cost at all. Furthermore, the paper analyses the different electric traction systems, as well as the solutions being implemented in the Spanish railways to improve their energy efficiency.
