Monitoring coastal erosion in BVI Newcastle University, Anegada Expedition 2013

For most students a long summer break away from the books means rolling around in mud at music festivals, fruit picking on farms and rising to the top of a corrupt Mafia underworld on an XBox. But as much fun as all that sounds, four stage 2 students - studying on the surveying and mapping science BSc at Newcastle University — had other ideas. Joshua Dack, Christopher Halliday, Larissa Ord and Lauren Tawn decided they would set themselves something a little more challenging for the summer holiday. That challenging little something was to independently organise and conduct a coastal survey of Anegada in the British Virgin Islands. And by independently organise, that's exactly what they did.They submitted a proposal to the expedition committee at the university and applied for sponsorship from various civil engineering and surveying organisations (including ICES) throughout the UK. Whatever the students managed to raise, it was then matched by the school. They liaised with government bodies; arranged international travel permits; ensured the transfer of the survey equipment through airport security; and all for no extra course credit - the expedition was completely isolated from their studies.With the expedition funded and planned to the last detail, it was time for the students to depart...
