Seeing the cover story in the last Civil Engineering Surveyor brought back a few memories. I worked for Survey International, a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Laing Group, from 1968-1994 and we had regular contact with the chief photographer John Sulman and his team. Survey International's main function was to provide the in-house survey and primary setting-out service for the whole of the Laing Group (building, civil engineering, international, Laing Homes etc) and we could also compete in the open market, hence why we didn't have 'Laing' in the name, but had their resources to back us when needed. We were based in the Laing HQ at Mill Hill, as was the photographic unit, which consisted of John Sulman and two other photographers who were all permanent employees of the group and had a purpose built studio. When the photographers wanted to borrow some survey equipment, and sometimes a 'model' who looked like he/she knew what they were doing with it, we'd get a call. Partly because we were close to hand in the same office complex, and partly because we had more photogenic kit than most of the construction sites had in the 1970s and 80s.
