Cultural workers of the world unite, you've nothing to lose but your theatres: 'Dny Nelclidu' ('Days of Unrest') and the initiative for a cultural Prague

While much has been written about creative cities and urban regeneration spurred on by a growth of cultural workers in the last decade (Florida, 2002), there has been far less commentary on how this occupational grouping has been involved in any political struggle or resistance (however see Markusen, 2006). During the week of 25-29 May 2008, a series of protests were organized by theatre actors, directors and cultural workers in the city of Prague under the banner of 'Dny Neklidu' ('Days of Unrest') to raise concern about financial cuts to non-profit theatres and question the direction of cultural policy generally in the Czech capital. I was lucky enough to be in Prague that week and was privileged to be involved in these events.
