摘要

In Walking in Cities, walking's meanings are as multiple as those who engage in it, inscribed as they are within the particular bodies, constellations of inequalities, and practices and signifiers of each place. The strength of the collection lies in the ways it highlights and explores the insights into city, life and culture emerging from its authors' different positionalities. Of necessity, these chapters contrast with much of the existing theoretical canon of walking's practice and performance, which has emerged from the privileged positions of white men. This is not to deny the usefulness of the writings of Lef ebvre, de Certeau, Benjamin, the Situationists and others mentioned in these pages, but this is a collection whose substance builds upon and moves beyond them to greet our diverse world.
