I think the major changes that characterized the past 20 years of the industry in general but in Europe in particular are the following: With regard to technology, the orientation versus different product lines taken by the different market segments were an absolute innovation. There was growing attention to T that caused the adoption of products with medium to high T values. Dimensional stability became a new focus, the growing complexity of the boards and geometry of the circuits required growing attention also to thermal properties, whereas halogen-free products were adopted mostly on consumer products and were seen, at least at the beginning, as a marketing tool rather than a real technical requirement. The evolving technologies, which allowed the production of more and more advanced products and, as a result, highly complex PCBs, caused the market to be split into commodity and high-tech products.
