One thing that has recently come to our attention is that there has been very little attention paid to the actual theory of electricity or magnetism. These are the very technologies that drive our industry and a basic understanding of them will help any projectionist deal with many of the day-to-day problems that arise in the projection room. Electricity passing through a wire produces two effects. Heat, which in turn produces light as in an electric light bulb, and a magnetic field, which produces movement as in an electric motor. Obviously a few lines in a magazine or a day at a training seminar does not replace years of experience and learning, but hopefully it will give an insight into the theories and encourage the reader to seek further information. Our aim as practical people is to be content with learning only as much theory as will enable us to get an intelligent grasp of our job, and why certain effects follow certain causes. This month we will look specifically at the basics of electricity in particular Ohms Law, and next month we will look at magnetism and how it is applied in electrical circuits.
