摘要

According to Sigmund Freud’s stratigraphic portrait of modernity, science hasnproduced three dislocating shocks. First, Nicolaus Copernicus bumped us fromnthe center of the universe by making the earth just another planet. Second,nCharles Darwin knocked us from the pinnacle of creation by making us justnanother accidental product of natural history. Finally, Freud himself deposednus from the throne of Cartesian rationality by demonstrating the power of thenunconscious. As he put it in the Introductory Lectures on Psychoanalysis,nthe ego “is not even master in its own house, but must content itself withnscanty information of what is going on unconsciously in its mind.”n1nThere is,nhowever, some irony in Freud’s vision. Although his history of science tellsna stirring tale of adolescent humiliation—sadly, we are not nearly asnimportant as we thought we were—we nevertheless remain at the narrativencenter of things. That is, even though science may wound our infantilennarcissism, it is still about us inasmuch as the measure of a scientificndiscovery’s significance is how dramatically it affects our self-image.
