English efforts to bring the reformed religion to Ireland ended in disaster andrnhelped to bring on centuries of conﬂict, which even today has repercussions.rnHistorical explanations for this failure have varied widely, at times the resultrnof sectarian interpretations. The task becomes even more difﬁcult because ofrnthe scarcity of primary documents to construct a conclusive picture of thernTudor period in Ireland. By focusing primarily on the diocese of Dublin,however, James Murray has put forward a balanced and quite convincingrnaccount of that failure through an examination of the archiepiscopates ofrnGeorge Browne, Hugh Curwen, and Adam Loftus and their efforts tornaccommodate changing religious directives from London at the same timernbalancing various pressures within Ireland. In the period covered, thesernvarious ecclesiastical leaders not only had to come to terms with thernreligious disarray in England but also with the tensions within Irelandrnbetween the English-Irish and the Gaelic-Irish populations.
