On August 16, Dr. P.W. Carr, Professornof Chemistry at the University of Minnesotanwill be sixty years old.nPeter William Carr was born innBrooklyn, New York in 1944 and receivednhis B.S. in Chemistry (1965) from thenPolytechnic Institute of Brooklyn wherenhe worked with Professor Louis Meites,nand a Ph.D. in Analytical Chemistry atnPennsylvania State University (1969)nunder the guidance of Joseph Jordan, thenprominent electrochemist. While a studentnhe was a research assistant and associate atnBrookhaven National Laboratory duringnthe summers of 1965 and 1966. After anbrief postdoctoral association with StanfordnUniversity Medical School he joinednthe University of Georgia (Athens), first asnan Assistant Professor and then AssociatenProfessor of Chemistry. In 1977 he joinednthe faculty of the University of Minnesota,nin Minneapolis, where he became Professornof Chemistry in 1981. In the close to 30nyear association with the University hensupervised 40 Ph.D. dissertations andn15 M.S. theses and 27 post-doctoralnassociates. He and his coworkers havenpublished over 300 papers in a variety ofnareas of analytical chemistry, includingnelectrochemistry, ion-selective electrodes,nthermochemistry, and especially chromatography.nHe holds 15 U.S. patents in thenareas related to chemical analysis andnchromatography. Together with ProfessornLarry Bowers he authored a monographnon the use of immobilized enzymes innanalytical chemistry. Most recently, hisnresearch interests have focused on understandingnthe nature of solute-solventninteractions as they pertain to the predictionnof retention, selectivity and optimizationnin chromatography. Additionalnareas of study include affinity chromatography,nthe theory of nonlinearnchromatography, and the development ofnchemically stable supports for highnperformance liquid chromatographyn(HPLC).
