XIE Zhu-Fan Outstanding Internist of Integrated Medicine

Prof. Xie graduated from Medical College, Peking (Beijing) University in December 1946. In 1955 when he was a physician-in-charge of the department of internal medicine, the First Hospital of Beijing Medical University, he was released from work to attend a special training course for acupuncture teachers conducted by the Ministry of Health. After finishing the course in 1956, he returned to the hospital and started clinical and research work on acupuncture in the department of internal medicine. He directed a research group in studying the effect of acupuncture, showing evidence of bi-direc-tional action on gastric secretion, and nervous mechanism of its action on intestinal peristalsis. In the middle of the fifties, these studies pioneered the integration of traditional Chinese medicine and Western medicine.
