Consultant Dashew tells the story of being called in by the CEO of a Midwestern construction company that had between $25 million and $5O million in annual sales. The CEO's father had created the company and eventually handed the company to him as CEO, alienating two brothers who never spoke to him again. The current CEO had six children in the business-three sons and three daughters-and wanted to avoid the bitterness that had characterized the previous transition. So the CEO hired Dashew to create a process of evaluation and grooming that would involve the children in making the ultimate decision.
