Noninvasive Estimation of the Lactate Threshold in a Subject With Dissociated Ventilatory and Pulmonary Gas Exchange Indices: A Case Report

This case report describes the responses to incre-nmental work-rate exercise in a healthy subjectn(with normal pulmonary function), for whom thenpulmonary gas exchange (V-slope) and ventilatory-nrelated indexes (ie, ventilatory equivalents andnend-tidal partial pressures for O2 and CO2)un-ncharacteristically do not occur at the same meta-nbolic rate. Based on the results of additionalnconstant-work-rate exercise tests, we propose that innthe (occasional) event of such a dissociation betweennthe V-slope and ventilatory-related responses normallynassociated with the lactate threshold (u0001L), then thenV-slope index should take priority as the u0001L estimator.
