F is for fluorescence and fluorine The cover picture shows aqueous and methanolic solutions of the new photostable fluorinated rhodamines that emit green or orange light. Surprisingly, N′,N-bis(2,2,2-trifluoroethyl)rhodamines were found to undergo sulfonation that provided the hydrophilic fluorinated dyes. After introducing amino reactive sites, fluorinated rhodamines may be used as fluorescent labels for (bio)molecules in optical microscopy and nanoscopy with very high light intensities.
