Unique biphasic binding to calf-thymus DNA and to the polynucleotides poly(dA–dT)2, poly(dG–dC)2, poly(dA)–poly(dT), and poly(dG)–poly(dC) has been observed for RuII–polypyridyl complexes with a pendant catechol functionality. The RuII–polypyridyl complexes preferentially bind to more flexible, alternating purine–pyrimidine sequences, particularly those that contain AT.TA steps, with very high affinities (Kb
