Almost all branches of world-wide industry have acquired much experience in making heat exchangers. Designers are mainly concerned with upgrading outdated constructions, which enables one to improve the efficiency, as well as the working and economic parameters of existing heat exchangers: 1. in compactness (ratio of heat-exchange surface area to volume occupied by exchanger); 2. the heat-exchange intensity by using an extensive exchange surface (finning, ribbing the exchange tubes, and so on), as well as various flow turbulizers, new materials, and new designs; 3. the thermal stresses, which have an effect on the working life; 4. the hydraulic resistance, which is related to working in costs; 5. the mass and consequently the metal content and cost; and 6. sound manufacturing design, particularly important in routine and mass production. There are some spheres of heat exchanger use in which very tight specifications are imposed. The literature deals extensively with heat exchangers for the oil, power, chemical, and other branches of industry in which the media operate up to 800 K. However, as regards exchangers for cooling high-temperature gases, the designer finds that there is hardly any information available.
