Trunk-pipeline centrifugal pumps are power-intensive equipment and therefore must be operationally reliable and efficient. Economical operation of pumping equipment depends on the efficiency of the pump unit. To attain the maximum efficiency at a given delivery and head, one must use a pump having an appropriate specific speed n_S. This is possible if the rotation speed is variable. However, increase in rotation speed is restricted by cavitation effect as well as by the need for ensuring optimum dimensions of the working members. Furthermore, the rotation speed of centrifugal pumps depends on the rotation speed of the electric drive. A motor having n_(max) = 3000 rpm acts as the drive for centrifugal pumps.
