A new type of marsh management technique has been developed: a stepping vehicle with pontoon supports and special kinematics, which provides for easy access. This stepping vehicle is fitted with a cutter for cultivating oil-impregnated marsh soils by continuous machining. Positive results are reported from tests on the BShM marsh vessel on an undrained peat deposit. Some of the largest oil deposits lie mainly in undrained peat bogs and marshy areas, particularly in West Siberia. The West Siberian marshes occupy more than half of the area. The carrying capacity of the ground in an undrained peat bog is determined by the strength of the top half-meter active layer. The limiting shearing stress for that layer, which is characteristic of peaty moss plant complexes, is only very low and constitutes 2.5-20 kPa. The shearing stress for the layer of dead peat under the active layer is less by factors of 4-8.
