Safety and the laboratory centrifuge

A number of hazards are associated with the use of the laboratory centrifuge. Centrifuge accidents can cause extreme damage and injury. However, risk of accident can be very low if good laboratory practices are followed. The user must be familiar with and follow the User's Manual provided with the equipment. The centrifuge, rotors, and containers must be compatible with each other, well maintained, and appropriate for the sample. Proper balancing of the rotor, containers, and samples is critical. Equipment must be cared for and rotor corrosion must be avoided. Spills must be cleaned up promptly and properly. Outdated, fatigued, and/or damaged rotors must be retired.
