Gastric lavage and ipecac-induced emesis, once standard treatments, have fallen out of favor and are currently rarely advised for removing poisonous substances from the stomach. Current recommendations consider both forms of gastric emptying as probably ineffective in altering outcome and both are potentially dangerous except under unusual circumstances. It has been found that activated charcoal offers a better, less risky treatment option in the event of ingested poisons. However, even that seemingly reasonable procedure has little scientific evidence to support its use.
