I have had some thermochemical studies performed on a process I am developing. The results obtained became steadily less credible as the four chemical stages proceeded. So I am forced to consider that reaction calori- metry, like reaction kinetics, is an academic pursuit and thus performed very differently to grown-up manufacturing chemistry. Both studies, and the equipment for them, tend to posit homogeneous mixtures. These can often be obtained by working sufficiently dilute. Which soon becomes habit; sometimes I have found professors doubt that it is possible to do chemistry above 10% concentration. High concentration is environmentally friendly-solvent that is not used cannot pollute-and economically favourable-nor has that solvent to be paid for. Low solvent use will incline to inho-mogeneous reaction, however hard that makes reliable measurement. There are other good reasons for inhomogeneity.
