Waiting, watching

There has been a lot of outrage since the inauguration of the 45th President of the United States on January 20th 2017. No small amount of that outrage has come from a lot of smart people in the country. Several of my colleagues have asked why I am not as concerned as they are over whatever the outrage of the week is all about. As I get older, I find myself taking the long view over a lot of things. American politics is certainly one of them. It is no secret that I believe in limited government and with it a limited bureaucracy to run it. That is a product of entering Hillsdale College as a UAW-supporting freshman whose father was a 40-year machine repairman at Buick, and after lengthy discussions with Professor John Willson and others regarding US History and the constitution, leaving Hillsdale as a Reagan Republican. As one cannot escape the study of Catholicism at a Jesuit-run university, one also cannot escape the study of American history and government at Hillsdale College regardless of their major. Dr. Willson's summary of America as "Family-Church-Local Community" made sense to me then and I think we could use a little more of that now. (As a humorous side note, my first car was a Chrysler product and my father forbade me to park it in our driveway. That conversation always started with, "By God, General Motors put you through college...").
