Bisphenol A: Regulatory, Scientific Puzzle

Recent findings have raised concerns about the health effects of the estrogen mimic bisphenol A, a compound so widely used that everyone in the industrialized world is exposed to it. These concerns have triggered a flurry of intense research by various government agencies, the plastics and food can industries, and the American Dental Association. Over the past few years, scientists have reported that bisphenol A leaches from dental sealants and food can linings, and from polycarbonate bottles and dishes. In late February, researchers at the University of Missouri, Columbia, led by Frederick S. vom Saal, reported that when extremely small doses of bisphenol A are given to pregnant mice for seven days, the adult male offspring have enlarged prostates.
