Silver platelets can undergo quantitative conversion to right bipyramids and twinned cubes by regrowth with silver in conditions that preserve original 2-D structural defects in resulting 3-D morphologies.rnUnderstanding and controlling metal nanoparticle (MNP) morphologies is important for a wide range of practical applications in diverse scientific fields, such as catalysis, biosensing, plasmonics, etc. To attain all the wealth of nanocrystal shapes analogous to crystal habits in mineralogy, the controlled incorporation and preservation of regular lattice defects is important since metals themselves feature a limited number of packing types.
