What inspired you to become a scientist?rnPure serendipity. I was pushed in the right direction by David Bellamy who, before he became a TV botanist, taught plant ecology and all sorts of other topics with amazing enthusiasm at the University of Durham in the 1960s. His field trips, especially to southern Germany and the Dolomites, were an incredible experience. His encouragement convinced me to do a PhD at the University of London's Bedford College.
