Intense electrogenerated chemiluminescence of a bis-cyclometalated alkynylgold(III) complex using tri-n-propylamine as a co-reactant at the fluorosurfactant-modified gold electrode has been observed for the first time.rnElectrogenerated chemiluminescence (ECL) involves the generation of species at the electrode surface that then undergo electron-transfer reactions to form excited states and subsequently emit light. Efficient ECL compounds are usually required to be capable of generating stable radical cations and anions with sufficient energy in the electron-transfer reactions to generate emitters with good quantum efficiency. This approach is typically called "annihilation" ECL. It is also possible to generate ECL in a single potential sweep using a co-reactant, of which, tri-n-propylamine (TPrA) appears to be the most efficient.
