Conditions have been found whereby it is possible to reversibly store > 11 wt% hydrogen through the direct hydrogenation of MgB_2 to Mg(BH_4)_2.rnThe development of high-capacity hydrogen storage materials that can be recharged at moderate conditions is a key technology for the widespread practical utilization of hydrogen as an energy carrier. A viable onboard hydrogen storage material must have: high gravimetric and volumetric hydrogen capacities; thermodynamic properties within rather stringent limits; as well as dehydrogenation and re-hydrogenation kinetics that allow hydrogen cycling at moderate temperatures.
