The Ru(Ⅱ)-H and water promoted asymmetric cleavage of 2,2'-pyridil to pyridine-2-carbaldehyde and unprecedented picolinic acid anion radical (PyCOOH~(-·)) complexes, which in solution produce H_2 gas and diamagnetic picolinate complexes of ruthenium(n) in moderate yields, is reported.
