The last sentence of Raffael Scheck’s interesting book reads in part, “it is a chal-nlenge for today’s Germans to find a nuanced German identity that ... does notnlet the twelve worst years of German history completely overshadow the othernthousand years of German history” (p. 223). Ironically, the chronologicalnparameters of Scheck’s work highlight precisely what in retrospect are thenmost negative years of German history.
