Upswing of the Indian cement industry

India, the country of contrasts, is very much on the ascent. The economic liberalization and opening of India that was ushered in when the country joined the WTO in 1995 have resulted in a high economic growth rate, even though 81% of the population are still living below the poverty level of 2 US$/day and the social indicators (life expectancy, infant mortality, disease transmission, medical care etc.) lag significantly behind by worldwide standards. The economic upswing is being driven especially by the high growth rate of the commercial sector and of the construction industry, by the increasing domestic and foreign investments and by money transfers amounting to over 18 billion US$ per year from skilled Indian workers in foreign countries.%Indien, das Land der Gegensätze, befindet sich im Aufwind. Die wirtschaftliche Liberalisierung und Öffnung Indiens mit dem WTO-Beitritt 1995 haben für ein hohes wirtschaftliches Wachstum gesorgt, obwohl noch 81 % der Bevölkerung unter der Armutsgrenze von 2 US$/Tag leben und die sozialen Indikatoren (Lebenserwartung, Kindersterblichkeit, Krankheitsübertragung, ärztliche Versorgung usw.) im Weltmaßstab eher hintere Plätze einnehmen. Zu der Wirtschaftbelebung tragen insbesondere das hohe Wachstum der Gewerbe- und Bauindustrie, die zunehmenden inländischen und ausländischen Investitionen sowie die Geldüberweisungen in Höhe von über 18 Mrd. US$ jährlich von indischen Facharbeitskräften im Aus-land bei.
