New study: 'Made in Germany' beats 'Low Cost' in the crisis

The number of production relocations has dropped by 40 % in the last three years.This is the result of a study by the Fraunhofer Institut fuer System- and Innovationsforschung, ISI, (Fraunhofer Research Institute for System and Innovation Research) carried out on behalf of the VDI (Association of German Engineers), which for the first time allows an insight into the relocation behaviour of German companies in times of the economic crisis (download under www.vdi.de/presse). VDI director Dr. Willi Fuchs commented on the figures, as follows: "For the time being, the production location Germany is extremely attractive". The quota of production relocations in the manufacturing trade currently only amounts to nine percent - the lowest level since 15 years. "We witness a renaissance of the production location Germany. Instead of placing their trust in poorly paid staff in low-wage countries, the companies are rediscovering the advantages offered by the location Germany in the economic crisis", added Fuchs. In the meantime, even every third relocating company is withdrawing its production capacities from abroad. Die Quote der Produktionsverlagerungen im Verarbeitenden Gewerbe beträgt aktuell nur noch neun Prozent - der tiefste Stand seit fünfzehn Jahren. „Wir erleben eine Renaissance des Produktionsstandortes Deutschland. Statt auf günstiges Personal in Niedriglohnländern zu setzen, entdecken Unternehmen in der Wirtschaftskrise stärker die Vorteile, die der Standort Deutschland bietet", ergänzt Fuchs. Mittlerweile kommt sogar auf jeden dritten Verlagerer ein Unternehmen, das Produktionskapazitäten aus dem Ausland zurückzieht. Das Hauptmotiv sind Qualitätsprobleme am ausländischen Standort.
