In belt conveyor systems, malfunctions and machine stoppages often lead to long downtimes. The production process and product deliveries may be brought to a complete halt. For many plant owners, such a downtime may involve very high costs, particularly in view of the tough international competition. If belt con- veyors are damaged, service personnel are usually needed for the repair work, because this has generally involved vulcanization of the belt. However, such specialist personnel may not be immediately available. A vulcanization job can often take four to six hours. The ends of the belt have to be carefully prepared and specially treated. Older and heavily worn belts often cannot be connected up by vulcanization.
