Looking to the future: Innovative solutions for managing wastes with high energy content

South Africa is rapidly running out of landfill airspace, and the granting of new licenses specifically for the landfilling of waste remains a challenge. As a result, the Department of Environmental Affairs (DEA) has promulgated regulations prohibiting or restricting certain waste types from landfill disposal, including all types of liquid wastes and wastes with significant calorific value. In order to effectively manage these waste streams, Interwaste has commissioned a blending platform facility that is capable of blending liquid, sludge and solid waste with high calorific value, and converting them to alternative fuel. This alternative fuel can be used in cement kilns as a partial replacement of conventional fuels, such as gas and coal. This initiative is a positive step towards solving the hazardous waste problem experienced in the country.
