Developing the high performance car dumper: Wagon dumper technology and its associated infrastructure; part 1

In the first part of this contribution the relevance of railway car dumping systems and the current development trends of this technology is demonstrated for the economic handling of bulk materials by rail. The basic choice between self-unloading wagons and fixed unloading systems is briefly discussed to show when each of these options is most suitable for the application. The difference between the various dumper types, such as rotary dumpers and side tipplers, is then explained with reference to their functional concept, design and operation. Building upon this background, the integration of these machines into the plant is explored, as well as the interactive relationship between the tippler and the railway wagons. The performance of the different systems is compared in the context of the constraints that will serve as selection criteria. The different functional subsystems are discussed, explaining the role played of each in the tipping process and wagon discharge cycle. These systems include indexing devices, wheel clamps, holding-down clamps and side shield.The technology used for these mechanisms is briefly discussed, showing the advantages and disadvantages of the different configurations that may be chosen.The operation of these systems within the context of the tipping cycle is covered in the follow-up paper published in the next issue of CEMENT INTERNATIONAL. This more detailed exploration provides insights into the techniques used for modeling the associated dynamic behaviors of the train and wagons. A number of auxiliary systems are required to adapt and optimize the performance of the dumper for local conditions and constraints. These optional enhancements include, amongst others, transfer platforms, lump crushers, dust suppression and thawing equipment and are covered in the follow-up contribution.
