The most efficient use of Portland cement clinker is an essential step on the way to decarbonising the cement industry. For this reason, cement manufacturers worldwide are working to minimise the clinker factor or to develop alternative binder concepts. The situation is further complicated by the fact that less fly ash will be available in the future and that the quantities and qualities of granulated blast furnace slag may also change. The replacement of Portland cement clinker by alternative clinker or binders may be associated with lower specific CO_2 emissions, but from today's point of view it will often remain a niche application, among other things because of limited raw material availability or limited performance. In the future, limestone and calcined clays and, to a limited extent, recycled crushed sands will have potential to replace clinker. Optimised concretes also offer scope for using clinker more efficiently.
