AT&T Wireless Services recently announced that authentication is one method that has helped the company reduce its fraud rate in the New York MSA by 90% in 1996. Prepaid and debit cellular systems promise to welcome credit challenged consumers and personal and business users wanting more spending control over their cellular accounts. Increasingly, carriers are turning to automated, network-embedded systems that provision, monitor, maintain, and control cellular networks. The growing rollout of digital cellular and PCS networks has made phones' operating capabilities on multiple air interface standards and frequency bands the area to watch.
