Creating and Using a Glacier Authority Index to Document Climate Change

Authority lists or indices are key components of catalogingand metadata work as they provide critical anchoring pointsto disambiguate between various entities. This articledescribes the creation of a glacier index at the University ofColorado Boulder and the National Snow and Ice Data Centerwhich required synthesizing various data sources into a comprehensivelist. This paper explores the background of thisproject, criteria used to justify the creation of the index, thecomplications inherent in creating a data source for two differenttypes of memory institutions, publishing that data inWikidata, and the impacts the index has for describing aspectsof climate change.
