Floristic Composition and Vegetation types of the Punta Guaniquilla Natural Reserve-Cabo Rojo, Puerto Rico

The Punta Guaniquilla Natural Reserve covers 152 ha and consists of upland and wetland habitat divided into seven main vegetation types; pasture, shrubland, woodland, forest, marsh, beach, and beach thickets. Pasture is the dominant vegetation type, covering an estimated 45 /100 or 77 ha, but like shru- blands(7.5/100) they result from human-related activities such as livestock grazing, agriculture, and woodcut- ting. Forests, the expected dominant vegetation type, occupy only 6.5/100 of the Reserve. The vascular flora consists of 253 species, of which 35/100 are trees.
