Nesting Territories of the Puerto Rican Broad-winged Hawk in the Rio Abajo Forest

Ten nonoverlapping and clumped nesting territories of the Puerto Rican Broad-winged Hawk (Buteo platypterus brunnescens Danforth and Smyth) were located in Raio Abajo Forest in 1994 an d1995. Nesting territories averaged 39.5 ha and varied in size form 22.1 to 76.9 ha. Territory dimensions matched Closely the space requriements of the Ridgway's hawk (Buteo ridgwayi Cory), a similar sized endemic raptor Of Hispaniola. All territories occupied in 1994 were re-occupied in 1995. Repeated use of territories suggests That these are "traditional" nesting areas.
