According to a report in Air Transport World, Guangzhou-based CHINA SOUTHERN AIRLINES is planning to launch a new all-cargo venture this year, likely based in Shanghai, but so far this has not been confirmed. China Southern had planned to launch an all-cargo joint venture with AIR FRANCE several years ago, but that project was abandoned when the bottom fell out of the cargo business in 2008. Since then the carrier has gradually shifted the focus of its main-deck operations from Guangzhou to Shanghai, and embarked on a considerable expansion of its freighter fleet by initially ordering six 777Fs, and last month doubling that order to twelve. (Previously it had operated just two 747-400Fs.)
