As the country faces a shortage of personal protective equipment (PPE)for use by medical personnel treating COVID-19 patients, the FederalEmergency Management Agency (FEMA) is utilizing chartered freighterflights for shipments into the U.S. The first flight, an Atlas Air-operated747-400F, arrived at New York’s JFK Airport on March 29 after departingfrom Shanghai Pudong Airport (PVG) and making a technical stopin Anchorage (ANC).FEMA Administrator Pete Gaynor announced the arrival of the first flightin a tweet, adding that supplies from the flight will be distributed in NewYork, New Jersey and Connecticut. The first shipment included 80 tons,or about 73 tonnes, of PPE, including 130,000 N95 masks, 1.8 millionface masks and gowns, 10.3 million gloves and thousands of thermometers,a FEMA spokesperson told Cargo Facts.
