The concept of port productivity grew in importance over the last decade as international trade grew by leaps and bounds, placing historic pressure on cargo-handling operations around the world. When the global recession hit in 2008, there was more of a survival instinct throughout the supply chain that seemed to tamp down productivity discussions for a time. The recession has since, mostly subsided, but in its massive wake, has left the shipping industry facing a new paradigm of mega-ocean carrier alliances that will reportedly be choosier with respect to the ports they call. The competition to be productive at marine terminals, and surrounding infrastructures is going to be fierce, as global trade is not growing quite so fast; meaning there's less to go around.
