Atmel's smart card business in flux

A fierce battle for control of chip maker Atmel has left the company - and its smart card division - pondering its future. An acrimonious battle is underway between current Atmel chief executive Steve Laub and former CEO and co-founder George Perlegos. Perlegos, who was ousted last year amid allegations of the misuse of corporate travel funds, is Atmel's biggest shareholder and he is urging shareholders to elect five new board members to replace the five current Atmel directors at an 18 May stockholder meeting.
