A simple two parameter model was suggested by Yoon and Nelson to represent the ideal breakthrough of a single contaminant through sorption or filtration media, C_f (V) = 1/(1 + exp[-k(V-C)]) (1) where C_f and V represent fractional effluent concentration and the ratio of total volumetric throughput to adsorbent bed volume respectively, and c, k are constants. In the current work, a more generalized four parameter model is derived, which simplifies to the model of Yoon and Nelson when fractional concentrations are used and the initial effluent concentration is zero. The model is expanded to encompass the simulation of non-ideal breakthrough curves and chromatographic peaks, and is applied to the kinetic modeling of the sorption behavior of ethyl acetate and acetone in humidified air on a carbon based molecular sieve.
