Among the lesser studied carbon structures is graphite surrounding metal particles on the nanometer scale. Such formations have been produced by the catalytic decomposition of carbon-containing gases on catalyst particles (e.g., Fe, Ni, Co), by carbon solution-precipitation on catalyst particles, and more recently by a carbon-arc with a variety of metals. Encapsulating layers of carbon can protect metal nanoparticles from environmental oxidation. Stable nanoparticles of the ferromagnetic metals would be useful as magnetic material for inks, xerography, imaging, and data storage.
