摘要

Soils are at the core of humankind's struggles to shape a more sustainable future both in terms of feeding, clothing, sheltering and providing energy to a growing world population, and mitigating and adapting to climate changes that pose a grave threat to societies and ecosystems, globally.Healthy soils being essential to support food, fibre and wood production from our agricultural and managed forestlands and, increasingly, biomass feedstocks for energy, is unquestioned. Of course, the attributes that constitute healthy and productive soils are many, but a central one is that of soil organic matter (SOM). SOM represents a striking duality in terms of its impact on soil function - it is both a stock to be hoarded for its value in creating favourable physical properties determining soil structure, aeration, sorption and water relations, and a resource that tempts exploitation and depletion to mine the plant nutrients contained within it . Thus, all too often, especially in resource-poor regions, there is a legacy of SOM losses that have degraded soils and reduced agricultural productivity. Reversing this trend is therefore crucial to attaining more sustainable agricultural production systems and to buffer against the impacts of increased frequency of extreme weather conditions expected due to climate change.
